Dental implant brands: does the brand really matter?

Updated on 29 October 2026 Ajam Dental Clinic, Tripoli Medically reviewed by Dr. Abdel Rahman Ajam on 1 November 2026

Dental implant brands differ in design, research history, global availability of parts and price, and well-documented systems have strong long-term evidence. But the brand is only one factor: diagnosis, bone quality, precise placement, a well-made crown, your health and your oral hygiene usually matter more. The key is a recognised, traceable system with long-term support for spare parts.

Why patients ask about implant brands

In Lebanon, patients often hear brand names such as Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem, Megagen, Neodent or Hiossen, and quotes for implants can vary a great deal. It is natural to wonder whether a more expensive brand is worth it, or whether a lower price means lower quality. The honest answer has several parts.

What differs between implant brands

  • Research and documentation: some systems have been studied for decades, with long-term published results. Others are newer, with less long-term data.
  • Surface treatment and design: the shape of the screw, the thread and the surface treatment influence how the bone attaches, especially in softer bone.
  • The connection: the way the abutment fits into the implant affects stability and how the gum and bone behave around it.
  • Range of components: a complete range allows the dentist to choose the right size and abutment for each situation.
  • Availability of spare parts: an implant may need a new screw or abutment years later. A brand with global distribution makes this much easier, including if you later live abroad.
  • Price: production, research and distribution costs differ, which is reflected in the price.

What matters more than the brand

  1. Diagnosis and planning: X-rays, often a 3D scan, an assessment of the bone, gums and bite, and a clear treatment plan. Our complete guide to dental implants explains each stage.
  2. Bone and gum quality: sometimes bone grafting is needed first.
  3. Precise placement in the right position and angle, respecting healing time.
  4. The crown on top: a well-fitting, well-designed crown that you can clean.
  5. Your health: uncontrolled diabetes and smoking increase the risk of complications.
  6. Maintenance: cleaning at home and regular check-ups protect the implant from inflammation (peri-implantitis).

A well-documented implant placed without proper planning can fail, while a recognised mid-range system placed and maintained carefully can last for many years.

Premium, mid-range and unknown systems

Many dentists group implant systems roughly into:

  • Premium systems with very long-term research and worldwide support
  • Established mid-range systems, widely used, with good clinical documentation and broad availability
  • Unknown or untraceable systems, without clear documentation or long-term availability of parts

The first two groups can both be sound choices depending on the case and the budget. The third group is the one to avoid: if the manufacturer disappears or parts cannot be found, repairing the crown years later can become difficult.

Questions to ask before choosing an implant

  • Which implant system will be used, and is it widely available internationally?
  • Will I receive the implant card or record with the brand, model, size and batch number?
  • What X-rays or scans are needed, and is bone grafting likely?
  • What is included in the quoted cost: implant, abutment, crown, temporary tooth, follow-up?
  • What kind of crown will be placed, and how will it be maintained?

Frequently asked questions

Is the most expensive implant brand always the best?

Not necessarily. Premium systems have the longest research history and worldwide support, which is valuable. But many established mid-range systems also have good clinical results. The success of an implant depends heavily on planning, placement, the crown and maintenance. What matters most is a recognised, traceable system suited to your case.

What happens if my implant brand is not available later?

Years after placement you might need a new screw, abutment or crown. With a widely distributed system, parts are usually easy to obtain, even abroad. With an unknown or discontinued system, finding compatible parts can be difficult and may limit repair options. This is why traceability and availability are important.

Should I receive information about my implant?

Yes. It is good practice to keep a record of the implant system, the model, the size and ideally the batch number. This information helps any dentist who treats you in the future, in Lebanon or abroad, to identify the implant and order compatible parts.

Does the brand affect how long an implant lasts?

It plays a role, mainly through design, surface and component quality. However, long-term success depends at least as much on bone quality, correct positioning, a well-fitting crown, avoiding smoking, controlling diabetes and cleaning carefully around the implant. Regular check-ups catch problems early.

Can a dentist use a different brand for the crown and the implant?

The abutment and screw connecting the crown to the implant must be compatible with that implant system. The crown itself can be made by a dental laboratory in different materials. Using original or certified compatible components gives the most predictable fit.
