01 Dental implants

A dental implant is a small post, usually made of titanium, placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once the bone has bonded to it, a process that usually takes a few months, a crown, a bridge or a denture is fixed on top.

Implants are suited to adults whose jaw has finished growing, who are in reasonable general health and who have enough bone, or in whom bone can be rebuilt. Smoking, poorly controlled diabetes and active gum disease can reduce the chances of success and are assessed first.

At the clinic, implant treatment starts with an examination, X-rays and a discussion of the alternatives, such as a bridge or a denture. Before anything begins, you are told what each stage involves and how long it usually takes.

02 Cosmetic dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry improves the colour, shape and proportions of the visible teeth. Options range from teeth whitening and composite bonding, which keep the natural tooth almost untouched, to E.max (lithium disilicate) ceramic veneers and crowns, which cover more of the tooth. A Hollywood smile is not a single product: it is a treatment plan that usually combines several of these options across the front teeth.

Aesthetic work at the clinic is led by Dr. Abdel Rahman Ajam, who holds an MSc in Aesthetic and Prosthetic Dentistry. It begins with smile design: looking at your face, lips, gums and bite, and agreeing on what is realistic.

The guiding principle is to remove as little healthy tooth structure as possible. Whitening or bonding is often considered before veneers, and decay or gum problems are treated first, because cosmetic work only lasts on a healthy base.

03 Crowns, bridges and dentures

Prosthodontics is the branch of dentistry that restores damaged teeth and replaces missing ones. A crown covers a weakened or heavily filled tooth; a bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by attaching to the teeth on either side; a denture is a removable appliance that replaces several or all of the teeth in a jaw.

This work is carried out by Dr. Abdel Rahman Ajam. Crowns are made in zirconia or ceramic, chosen according to the position of the tooth, the forces it has to withstand and how it should look.

Most crowns and bridges need at least two visits: one to prepare the tooth and take impressions, with a temporary crown in place, and one to fit the final restoration. New dentures usually need a few adjustment visits during the first weeks.

04 Root canal treatment

Root canal treatment saves a tooth whose nerve, called the pulp, is inflamed or infected, often because of deep decay, a crack or an old injury. Under local anaesthesia, the inside of the tooth is cleaned, disinfected and sealed. This relieves the pain and allows you to keep your natural tooth instead of having it removed.

At Ajam Dental Clinic, root canal treatment, including re-treatment of teeth that were treated before, is carried out by a visiting specialist endodontist. Depending on the tooth and the infection, it takes one or more appointments.

A back tooth that has had root canal treatment becomes more fragile, so a crown is often recommended afterwards to protect it from fracture.

05 Extractions and oral surgery

Sometimes a tooth cannot be saved: it may be too broken down, loose because of advanced gum disease, or the source of repeated infections. A simple extraction removes a visible tooth under local anaesthesia. A surgical extraction is needed when the tooth is broken at the gum line or not fully erupted, and may involve a small opening in the gum and a few stitches.

Wisdom teeth are the most common reason for oral surgery. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out: removal is usually advised when it causes pain, repeated infections of the gum around it, decay, or damage to the neighbouring tooth. An X-ray shows its position and helps plan the procedure.

Before any extraction, the reasons and alternatives are explained, and you leave with clear aftercare instructions to reduce the risk of a dry socket.

06 Prevention and gum care

Most dental problems are easier, quicker and more comfortable to treat when they are found early. A check-up includes an examination of the teeth, the gums and the soft tissues of the mouth, with X-rays when needed, to detect decay, gum disease or other changes before they cause pain.

Scaling removes the hardened tartar that brushing cannot remove, above and just below the gum line; polishing then removes surface stains. Together they help prevent gum disease and treat it in its early stages, when the first signs are often bleeding on brushing and bad breath.

Many people benefit from a check-up and cleaning about every six months, although the right interval depends on the health of your gums and your risk of decay.

07 Children’s dentistry

All dental care for babies, children and teenagers at the clinic is provided by Dr. Soumaya Ajam, whose specialty is paediatric dentistry. She holds a University Diploma in Paediatric Dentistry from Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth.

A first visit is useful when the first tooth appears, and in any case by the first birthday. Early visits let a child get used to the dental chair calmly, and give parents practical advice on brushing, diet, teething and fluoride.

Treatment covers check-ups, fillings in baby and permanent teeth, fluoride varnish, fissure sealants, extractions when needed and care after a dental injury. Anxious children are approached step by step, at their own pace.

08 Dental emergencies

Severe toothache, a swelling, a broken or knocked-out tooth, or a crown that has come off all need prompt advice. Contact the clinic by WhatsApp or phone, describe what happened and, if possible, send a photo, so that we can advise you.

If a permanent tooth is knocked out, act quickly: hold it by the crown, not the root, rinse it briefly if it is dirty, and either put it back in its socket or keep it in milk, then seek dental care immediately. A knocked-out baby tooth should not be put back.

Go to a hospital emergency department straight away if a swelling makes it difficult to breathe or swallow, spreads quickly, or comes with a high fever. These signs need urgent medical care.
