A Hollywood smile is not one specific treatment but a planned makeover of the teeth that show when you smile, usually with ceramic or composite veneers and sometimes crowns, whitening or bonding. Done well, it looks natural and suits your face. It is not a quick fix, it is usually not reversible, and it is not right for everyone.
What a Hollywood smile really is
In Lebanon and across the Middle East, “Hollywood smile” has become the everyday name for a full cosmetic makeover of the front teeth. Dentists usually call it smile design or a smile makeover. The aim is a smile that is brighter, more even and in harmony with your lips, gums and face.
There is no single “Hollywood smile product”. Depending on your teeth, the plan may combine several treatments:
- veneers: thin shells of ceramic, such as E.max, or of composite resin, bonded to the front of the teeth;
- crowns: caps that cover the whole tooth, used when a tooth is heavily filled, broken or root-treated;
- teeth whitening, often done first so that the new teeth and the remaining natural teeth match;
- composite bonding: tooth-coloured resin added to reshape small chips or close small gaps;
- gum treatment or minor gum reshaping when the gum line is uneven.
Most Hollywood smiles involve the upper teeth that are visible when you smile, often between six and ten teeth, and sometimes the lower front teeth as well. The exact number depends on how wide your smile is, not on a standard package. Since veneers are at the heart of most plans, our guide to dental veneers, their types and lifespan is a useful next read.
What a Hollywood smile is not
Social media has created a few expectations that are worth correcting before you decide.
- It is not the whitest shade available. Very bright, opaque white often looks artificial in daylight. A natural result is usually a light shade that suits your skin tone and the whites of your eyes.
- It is not identical, flat, square teeth. Natural front teeth have slightly different sizes, rounded edges and some translucency at the tips. Copying these details is what makes a smile look real.
- It is not a treatment for disease. Veneers do not cure decay, gum disease or a bad bite; these must be treated first, or the new teeth will not last.
- It is not always reversible. Ceramic veneers and crowns usually require shaping of the natural tooth, and that enamel does not grow back.
- It is not a one-time expense for life. Veneers and crowns are durable, but they will need checking, maintenance and eventually replacement.
How much of the tooth has to be shaped varies a lot from one case to another. Our article do veneers require filing down your teeth? explains when little or no preparation is possible and when more is needed.
Who it suits, and when another option is better
A Hollywood smile can be a good choice for adults whose teeth and gums are healthy and who want to change several of the following at once: colour that does not respond to whitening, worn or chipped edges, small gaps, uneven shapes or old fillings that have discoloured.
It is usually not the first choice in these situations:
- active decay or untreated gum disease;
- heavy tooth grinding (bruxism) that is not controlled, because it can chip or loosen veneers;
- marked crowding or a bite problem, where moving the teeth with orthodontic treatment (braces or aligners, provided by an orthodontist) may give a better and more conservative result;
- children and young teenagers, whose teeth and gums are still developing;
- teeth that are healthy and only slightly yellow, where whitening alone may be enough.
| Option | Best for | Effect on natural teeth |
|---|---|---|
| Teeth whitening | Healthy teeth that are only discoloured | No removal of enamel |
| Composite bonding | Small chips, small gaps, minor shape changes | Little or none |
| Composite veneers | Moderate changes at a lower complexity | Often little or none |
| Ceramic (E.max) veneers | Lasting change of colour and shape | Usually a thin layer of enamel |
| Crowns | Heavily filled, broken or root-treated teeth | More of the tooth is reshaped |
Ceramic and composite can also be combined in the same smile. For a closer look at the two main materials, read E.max veneers or composite veneers: which suits you?
Planning a Hollywood smile in Tripoli: the steps
A careful Hollywood smile is planned before anything is changed. With ceramic veneers, the active phase usually takes about two to four weeks, but it can be longer if your teeth or gums need treatment first. A typical sequence:
- Consultation and examination (about 30 to 60 minutes). The dentist listens to what you would like to change, checks your teeth, gums and bite, and usually takes X-rays and photographs.
- Health first. Any decay, gum inflammation or infected tooth is treated, and a scaling (professional cleaning to remove tartar) is often done.
- Whitening, if planned. Natural teeth that will not be covered are whitened first, so the new shade can be matched to them.
- Smile design and preview. Using photographs and moulds (impressions), the new shape is planned. In many cases a temporary trial version, called a mock-up, is placed over your teeth so you can see and approve the proposal.
- Preparation (often two to three hours for a full upper smile). Under local anaesthesia, the teeth are shaped as planned, impressions are taken and temporary veneers are fitted.
- Laboratory stage (usually one to two weeks). A dental technician makes the veneers or crowns to the agreed shape and shade.
- Try-in and bonding (often two to three hours). You see the final teeth in your mouth before they are fixed. They are then bonded, the excess cement is removed and the bite is adjusted.
- Review, about one to two weeks later, to check the gums and the bite.
Composite veneers follow a shorter path and can often be built directly on the teeth in one or two long visits. If you have a date in mind, such as an engagement or a wedding, start early: our realistic timeline for preparing your smile before your wedding shows how to plan backwards.
Pain, anaesthesia and recovery
Most patients find the treatment more tiring than painful, mainly because the appointments are long. When teeth are shaped, local anaesthesia (a numbing injection in the gum) is used, so you feel pressure and vibration but not pain. Composite work with little or no preparation can sometimes be done without an injection.
After the preparation and after bonding, it is common to have:
- some sensitivity to cold for a few days;
- slightly sore gums around the new teeth, which usually settle within a week;
- a short adjustment period: the teeth may feel different to your tongue and lips, and some sounds may feel unusual at first.
Ordinary painkillers that are suitable for you are usually enough. Pain that keeps increasing, swelling or a bite that feels high should be checked by your dentist.
Aftercare is simple but important: brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, clean between the teeth every day, avoid biting very hard objects such as ice, nutshells or pens, and attend regular check-ups and cleanings. If you grind or clench, a night guard (a thin protective plate worn while you sleep) is often recommended.
How long it lasts and what can go wrong
With good care, ceramic veneers often last ten to fifteen years or more, and crowns have a similar range. Composite veneers usually need polishing or repair sooner and often last around five to seven years. These are averages, not promises: your bite, habits and oral hygiene matter as much as the material.
Possible problems include:
- temporary or, less often, lasting sensitivity;
- a veneer that chips, cracks or comes loose and needs repair or replacement;
- gum inflammation at the edges of the veneers if cleaning is poor;
- a colour difference over time between composite and natural teeth;
- on teeth that need more reshaping, such as for crowns, a small risk that the nerve becomes irritated and later needs root canal treatment.
The most important point to understand is that once enamel has been removed, the teeth will always need some form of covering. That is why the planning stage, and an honest discussion of the alternatives, matter so much.
What determines the cost
There is no fixed price for a Hollywood smile, because no two plans are the same. The cost depends mainly on:
- the number of teeth treated, upper only or upper and lower;
- the materials chosen: ceramic such as E.max, zirconia or ceramic crowns, or composite;
- laboratory work, including the smile design and the mock-up;
- treatment needed first, such as scaling, fillings, gum care, root canal treatment or whitening;
- the complexity of the case, for example old crowns to replace or bite issues;
- extras such as a night guard.
A reliable estimate is only possible after an examination, when the dentist can explain the options and what each one involves.

Frequently asked questions
How many teeth do I need for a Hollywood smile?
There is no fixed number. Many people need between six and ten upper teeth, because those are the teeth that show when they smile, but someone with a wide smile may show more, and some people also want the lower front teeth treated. The dentist decides the number by looking at your smile from the front and the side, in photographs and while you talk. Treating too few teeth can leave a visible step in colour or shape between the new teeth and the natural ones, while treating more than necessary removes healthy enamel without real benefit.
Can I have a Hollywood smile without filing my teeth?
Sometimes, yes. Composite veneers or very thin ceramic veneers can, in selected cases, be placed with little or no shaping of the enamel, for example when the teeth are small, slightly inward or have small gaps. When the teeth are large, stand forward or are very dark, some preparation is usually needed so the result does not look bulky. The honest answer depends on your own teeth, and a mock-up can show the planned shape before anything is changed. Be cautious of anyone who promises a no-preparation result before examining you.
Is a Hollywood smile permanent? Can it be removed later?
Ceramic veneers and crowns are designed to stay in place for many years, but they are not permanent in the sense of lasting a lifetime: they will usually need to be replaced at some point. If enamel was removed, the teeth will always need a covering afterwards, so the treatment should be considered irreversible. Composite veneers placed without preparation are more reversible, since they can often be polished away. This is why it is worth taking your time, seeing a preview and asking about simpler options before you decide.
Can I still drink coffee and smoke after a Hollywood smile?
Ceramic veneers such as E.max resist staining very well, so coffee, tea and argileh will not change their colour much. The edges where the veneer meets the tooth, the gums and any natural teeth that were not covered can still stain, and composite veneers absorb stains more easily. Smoking also harms the gums, and healthy gums are essential to keep the veneers looking good. Rinsing with water after dark drinks, brushing well and having regular cleanings help keep the result bright. Stopping smoking is the best choice for both your smile and your health.
I live abroad and visit Lebanon in summer. Can it be done during my stay?
It is often possible, but it needs planning. Ceramic veneers usually require at least two or three visits over about two to four weeks, plus a review, and any decay or gum problem must be treated first, which can add time. It helps to send recent photographs and X-rays if you have them, and to book the consultation at the start of your stay rather than the end. Rushing the try-in to meet a flight date is not a good idea. If your stay is short, composite work or a staged plan may be more realistic.
I grind my teeth at night. Can I still have a Hollywood smile?
Grinding or clenching, called bruxism, puts strong forces on the teeth and is one of the main reasons veneers chip or come loose. It does not always rule out treatment, but it must be taken into account. The dentist will look for signs of wear, may adjust the design or the material, and will usually recommend a night guard, a thin plate worn while you sleep to protect the teeth. In some cases, crowns or a different approach may be safer. Tell the dentist if you wake with tired jaw muscles or someone hears you grinding.
