E.max veneers for a Hollywood smile: the treatment step by step

Updated on 22 October 2026 Ajam Dental Clinic, Tripoli Medically reviewed by Dr. Abdel Rahman Ajam on 27 October 2026

An E.max veneer Hollywood smile usually takes four or five visits over two to four weeks: a consultation, photos and a trial smile (mock-up), tooth preparation with temporary veneers, a try-in followed by bonding, and a review. Most plans cover six to ten upper teeth, and with good care the ceramic often lasts ten to fifteen years or more.

What the treatment involves

A Hollywood smile with E.max veneers means covering the front surface of the teeth that show when you smile with thin, custom-made ceramic shells. E.max is a brand of lithium disilicate, a strong glass-ceramic that lets light through much like natural enamel. Each veneer is made in a dental laboratory to a shape agreed with you in advance, then bonded permanently to the tooth.

If you are still deciding whether a smile makeover is right for you, start with what a Hollywood smile really is, and what it is not; if you are hesitating between materials, read our comparison of E.max and composite veneers.

Who is a good candidate?

E.max veneers usually suit adults whose teeth and gums are healthy and who want to change several things at once:

  • colour that does not respond well to whitening, for example grey or banded staining;
  • worn, chipped or uneven edges;
  • small gaps between the front teeth;
  • old fillings on the front teeth that have darkened.

They are usually not the first choice, or they need other treatment first, in these situations:

  • active decay or untreated gum disease;
  • heavy grinding or clenching of the teeth (bruxism) that is not controlled;
  • markedly crowded teeth or a bite that is off, where orthodontic treatment from an orthodontist may give a more conservative result;
  • a tooth that has lost much of its structure, where a crown is generally stronger, as explained in our article on zirconia or E.max crowns for front and back teeth;
  • teenagers, whose teeth and gums are still maturing.

How many teeth are usually involved?

There is no standard number. The dentist looks at how many teeth show when you smile broadly and when you speak, from the front and from the side. These are the most common patterns:

Teeth treatedWhen it is usually considered
6 upper teeth (canine to canine)A narrower smile in which the teeth behind the canines barely show
8 upper teeth (up to the first premolars)A common choice for a smile of average width
10 upper teeth (up to the second premolars)A wide smile that clearly shows the side teeth
Upper and lower front teethWhen the lower teeth show as you speak or would not match the new ones

Premolars are the teeth just behind the canines, the pointed “eye teeth”. Treating too few teeth can leave a visible step in colour or shape between the new teeth and the natural ones. Treating more than needed removes healthy enamel for little benefit.

The treatment, visit by visit

With E.max veneers, the active phase of treatment usually takes about two to four weeks. It can take longer if your gums or teeth need treatment first. If you live abroad and visit Lebanon for a limited time, our planning guide for dental treatment during a visit to Lebanon explains how to fit the steps into your stay.

Visit 1: consultation and examination (about 30 to 60 minutes)

You explain what bothers you about your smile and what you would like to keep. The dentist checks each tooth, the gums and your bite, and usually takes X-rays to look for hidden decay or old problems under fillings. Habits such as grinding, nail-biting or chewing on pens are discussed, because they affect how long ceramic lasts.

Any decay or gum inflammation is treated first, often starting with a scaling (a professional cleaning that removes tartar). If the teeth that will not receive veneers need to be lighter, whitening is done at this stage and the shade is left to settle for about two weeks; our guide to in-clinic and at-home teeth whitening explains both options.

Visit 2: photographs, impressions and the mock-up (about an hour)

Photographs of your face and smile, and impressions or a digital scan of your teeth, are used to design the new shape. From a wax model of the planned teeth (a diagnostic wax-up), a temporary tooth-coloured resin is placed directly over your own teeth, without any drilling: this is the mock-up, or trial smile.

You can look at it in a mirror and in daylight, speak, smile, take photos and ask for changes, such as slightly shorter teeth or softer corners. How a complete plan is built is explained in more detail in our article on how a smile design is planned.

Visit 3: preparation and temporary veneers (often two to three hours)

Under local anaesthesia (a numbing injection that affects only the area being treated), the teeth are gently reshaped, usually by removing a thin layer of enamel from the front surface and sometimes from the edge. Many dentists prepare the teeth through the approved mock-up, so that only the necessary amount is removed. Our article do veneers require filing down your teeth? explains how much is usually taken and why.

The dentist then records the shade, takes final impressions or a scan, and fits temporary veneers, often made from the same design as the mock-up. The laboratory usually needs one to two weeks to make the ceramic veneers.

Living with temporary veneers

Temporaries are a preview: usually less shiny than the final veneers and sometimes slightly bulky. During this period:

  • avoid hard and sticky foods, and cut food into small pieces;
  • brush gently and clean between the teeth the way your dentist shows you;
  • expect some sensitivity to cold;
  • if a temporary comes loose, keep it and contact the clinic rather than gluing it yourself;
  • if the length or shape bothers you, tell the dentist before the final visit, while it can still be changed.

Visit 4: try-in and bonding (often two to three hours)

The temporaries are removed and the teeth are cleaned. Each ceramic veneer is first tried in with a water-soluble paste that imitates the colour of the cement, so you can see the final shape and shade in your mouth before anything is fixed. This is the last moment to ask for changes.

For bonding, the teeth are kept dry, the enamel is treated with a mild acid gel so that the adhesive can grip, and the inside of each veneer is prepared with its own bonding agents. The veneer is seated with a resin cement, which is hardened with a curing light. Excess cement is removed, the edges are polished and your bite is checked, including when you slide your jaw sideways and forward.

Visit 5: review (about one to two weeks later)

The dentist checks the gums around the veneers, looks for any remaining cement and fine-tunes the bite. If you grind or clench, impressions for a night guard (a thin protective plate worn while you sleep) are often taken at this stage.

Pain, comfort and the first days after bonding

Most people find the treatment more tiring than painful, mainly because the preparation and bonding appointments are long. With local anaesthesia you feel pressure and vibration rather than pain, and you can ask for a short break at any time.

In the first days after bonding, it is common to notice:

  • some sensitivity to cold, which usually settles within days;
  • slightly sore or puffy gums at the edges of the veneers, which usually calm down within a week;
  • a different feel for your tongue and lips, and small changes in sounds such as “s” and “f” while you adapt, often within one or two weeks.

Painkillers that you normally tolerate are usually enough. Contact the dentist if the pain keeps increasing, if a tooth aches on its own, or if your bite feels high when you close.

Aftercare and what affects how long E.max veneers last

With good care, E.max veneers often last ten to fifteen years or more. This is an average, not a promise, and several factors weigh more than the material itself:

  • your bite and habits: grinding, clenching, biting nails, opening packets with your teeth or chewing ice all put the ceramic under stress;
  • how much enamel remains, since veneers bond best to enamel;
  • gum health and cleaning: plaque at the edges can lead to inflamed gums or to decay on the natural tooth under the veneer;
  • regular check-ups, which catch small problems at the edges early.

Daily care is simple:

  • brush twice a day with a soft brush and a fluoride toothpaste that is not highly abrasive;
  • clean between the teeth every day with floss or small interdental brushes;
  • wear your night guard every night if one has been advised;
  • keep your check-ups and professional cleanings, usually every six months.

Whitening does not lighten ceramic, so any whitening of the other teeth should be done before the veneers, not after.

Risks, alternatives and what determines the cost

Ceramic veneers are well established, but not free of risk:

  • temporary or, less often, lasting sensitivity;
  • a veneer that chips, cracks or comes loose and needs repair or replacement;
  • gum irritation at the edges if cleaning is poor;
  • rarely, irritation of the nerve of a prepared tooth, which may later need root canal treatment.

Because enamel does not grow back, prepared teeth will always need a covering. That is why the alternatives are discussed first: whitening alone, composite bonding or composite veneers, orthodontic treatment by an orthodontist for crowded teeth, or crowns for badly damaged teeth.

There is no fixed price for an E.max Hollywood smile. The cost depends mainly on:

  • the number of teeth, and whether the lower teeth are included;
  • treatment needed first, such as scaling, fillings or gum care;
  • the smile design work, the mock-up and the temporaries;
  • extras such as a night guard.

A reliable estimate is only possible after an examination.

Frequently asked questions

Can I eat normally with temporary veneers?

Mostly, yes, with some care. Temporary veneers are made of resin and held with a weak cement, because they are designed to come off easily at the next visit. Choose softer foods, cut bread, meat and fruit into small pieces and chew with your back teeth. Avoid biting into apples, nuts, ice, toffee and chewing gum. Dark drinks such as coffee or tea can stain the temporaries, which does not affect the final result. If a temporary loosens or breaks, keep the piece and contact the clinic; do not glue it back with household products, which can harm the prepared tooth.

Can I still change the shape or shade after the try-in?

Changes are easiest at the mock-up and temporary stages, while the design is still being refined. At the try-in you see the actual ceramic veneers with a paste that imitates the cement, and the dentist can still fine-tune the final colour slightly through the choice of cement, or send a veneer back to the laboratory if something is clearly not right. Once a veneer is bonded, its colour cannot be changed and its shape can only be adjusted a little. That is why it helps to bring a trusted person or photos to the try-in, and to say clearly what you think.

Will I need time off work?

Most people go back to work the next day. The preparation and bonding appointments are long, and the numbness from the local anaesthetic usually lasts a few hours, so many patients prefer to keep the rest of that day free. Your speech may sound slightly different for a few days while your tongue adapts to the new shape of the teeth, which matters mainly if you talk a lot at work or speak in public. If you have an important event, such as a wedding or a presentation, allow at least one to two weeks between bonding and the event, so the gums can settle and any small adjustments can be made.

What happens if an E.max veneer chips or comes off later?

If a veneer comes off in one piece, keep it, avoid chewing on that side and contact the clinic. A veneer that comes off intact can sometimes be cleaned and bonded again, depending on its condition and on the tooth beneath it. A small chip can sometimes be polished smooth or repaired with composite resin, while a larger crack usually means making a new veneer. The dentist will also look for the cause, such as grinding at night or biting hard objects, because a new veneer may break again if the cause is not addressed. A night guard is often part of the solution.

I already have old crowns or fillings on my front teeth. Can they be combined with veneers?

Yes, but they need to be planned together. Neither ceramic veneers nor crowns change colour, so old crowns that are darker or a different shape usually need replacing at the same time to match the new veneers, often with E.max or other ceramic crowns. A large old filling on a front tooth may leave too little enamel for a veneer to bond well; in that case a crown may be the stronger choice for that tooth. Small, sound fillings can often stay under a veneer or be replaced during preparation. The examination and X-rays show which option suits each tooth.

Will the edges of my veneers darken over time?

E.max ceramic itself resists staining very well. What can change over the years is the thin line of cement at the edge of the veneer, which may pick up some colour, especially with heavy smoking, a lot of coffee or tea, or irregular cleaning. Gums can also recede slightly with age or with hard brushing, revealing a small strip of natural tooth at the gum line. Gentle but thorough brushing, daily cleaning between the teeth and regular professional cleanings help a great deal. Light staining at the edges can often be polished away; more visible changes may eventually be a reason to renew a veneer.
