Receding gums: causes, treatment and how to stop them getting worse

Updated on 29 October 2026 Ajam Dental Clinic, Tripoli Medically reviewed by Dr. Abdel Rahman Ajam on 1 November 2026

Receding gums means the gum line has pulled back, exposing part of the tooth root. It is caused mainly by gum disease, brushing too hard and naturally thin gums, and sometimes by grinding or tooth position. Gums do not grow back on their own, but recession can usually be stopped, sensitivity treated and, in selected cases, the gum surgically restored.

What are receding gums?

Normally, the gum covers the root of each tooth and ends just around the crown, the white part you see. When the gum recedes, the margin moves towards the root. The tooth looks longer, a notch may appear at the gum line, and the exposed root, which has no enamel, becomes sensitive and more prone to decay.

Recession develops slowly, often over years, so many people only notice it when a tooth becomes sensitive or looks different in photos.

The main causes of receding gums

  • Gum disease (periodontitis): the bone and gum attachment around the teeth are slowly destroyed by long-standing inflammation. This is the most important cause in adults. Read our guide to gum disease signs and treatment.
  • Brushing too hard or with a hard brush: aggressive horizontal scrubbing wears away gum and root surface, typically on canines and premolars.
  • Thin gums: some people naturally have a thin gum and bone layer, which recedes more easily.
  • Tooth position: teeth that stand out of the arch have less bone cover.
  • Grinding and clenching: heavy forces may contribute, especially combined with other factors.
  • Smoking: it worsens gum disease and masks bleeding, its early warning sign.
  • Piercings in the lip or tongue that rub against the gum.

Signs to watch for

  • Teeth that look longer than before
  • Sensitivity to cold, sweet or touch near the gum line
  • A visible step or notch where the gum ends
  • Gaps opening between teeth near the gums
  • Bleeding when brushing, which points to active gum inflammation; see bleeding gums when brushing
  • In advanced cases, loose teeth

Do receding gums grow back?

No. Once gum tissue and the bone underneath have been lost, they do not regenerate by themselves. That is why the first goal of treatment is to stop the process and protect what remains. In some cases, part of the lost gum can be restored surgically.

How receding gums are treated

1. Stop the cause

  • Professional cleaning and, if there is gum disease, deep cleaning of the root surfaces under the gum to control the inflammation
  • Changing brushing technique: a soft brush, gentle small movements and no scrubbing
  • Treating grinding with a night guard if needed
  • Stopping smoking

2. Treat the consequences

  • Sensitivity: desensitising toothpaste, fluoride varnish or a protective coating on the root. Our article on tooth sensitivity to cold and heat gives more detail.
  • Notches at the gum line: a tooth-coloured composite filling can protect and cover the exposed area
  • Decay on the root: treated like any other cavity

3. Restore the gum, in selected cases

When recession is significant, progressing or affecting appearance, a gum graft may be considered. Tissue, usually taken from the palate, is placed over the exposed root. This is a specialised procedure and the dentist will explain whether you are a candidate.

How to prevent receding gums

  1. Use a soft or extra-soft toothbrush, or an electric toothbrush with a pressure sensor.
  2. Brush gently with small circular movements, angling the bristles towards the gum line.
  3. Clean between your teeth daily.
  4. Have regular check-ups and professional cleanings, so gum disease is caught early.
  5. Do not smoke.
  6. Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth.

Frequently asked questions

Is receding gums serious?

Mild recession that is stable is common and not dangerous, but it can cause sensitivity and root decay. Recession caused by active gum disease is more serious, because the bone supporting the teeth is being lost and teeth can eventually become loose. An examination with gum measurements tells which situation you are in.

Can mouthwash or natural remedies make gums grow back?

No product can make lost gum tissue grow back. Mouthwashes can help control bacteria and some reduce sensitivity, but they do not reverse recession. The effective steps are treating gum disease, brushing gently and, in selected cases, a gum graft.

Does an electric toothbrush cause gum recession?

Not when used correctly. Many electric brushes have a pressure sensor that warns you when you press too hard, which can actually protect the gums. The brush should be guided gently along the teeth rather than scrubbed back and forth.

Can receding gums cause teeth to fall out?

Recession on its own, from brushing too hard for example, rarely causes tooth loss. When it is part of advanced gum disease, with loss of the bone around the roots, teeth can become loose and may eventually be lost. Early diagnosis and treatment of gum disease prevent this in most cases.

Can I have whitening or veneers if my gums are receding?

Possibly, but exposed roots can be very sensitive to whitening gels and do not whiten like enamel. Cosmetic work is planned after the gums are healthy and stable, so that the result lasts and the gum line is taken into account.
